Wildlife of Zorhros
These are the notable creatures of Zorhros, often mentioned in local stories, trade, and survival guides. Each plays a vital role in the dust-choked ecosystem, evolved to survive where few others can.
Cave Wolves
Cave Wolves rule the deepest caverns of Zorhros, where darkness hides more than stone. Massive, cunning, and patient, they hunt in packs with light-sensitive eyes and can bring down Thornbacks and wild boar. Rare sightings of wolf in the village is a warning that something the wolves fear is moving beneath Zorhros.
Velkris
The dunes do not warn you when a Velkris is near. Vast, silent, and fearless, these shimmering predators glide beneath the sand with frightening speed, their side fins driving them through the deep dunes like living blades. When the surface begins to ripple, it is already too late.
Wild Zorhrosian Boar
Built like living battering rams, wild boars are fierce omnivores with tusks strong enough to crush starship scrap and hardened obsidian. Stubborn, fast, and nearly impossible to turn once they charge, they are one of the few creatures even Cave Wolves prefer to hunt in packs.
Skarn Rhjǫrtråý
Often called Skarn Stag, these lean desert grazers roam the scrub flats, dry washes, and lower ridges of Zorhros. Their pale coats vanish into heat shimmer, while their horns scrape lichen, hook thornleaf, and dig for buried salt-roots. They help control invasive desert plants, but are hunted by wild boar — and near deep sand pools, by Velkris waiting beneath the loose sand.
Thornbacks
Thornbacks are armored herbivores built like walking fortresses, their backs and flanks bristling with massive spikes. They can survive for months without direct water, feeding on roots, stone-moss, and bitter desert growth. Slow to anger but hard to stop, they are one of the few creatures most predators think twice about attacking.
Speckled Picutn
Speckled Picutn thrive in the pure underground lakes and cavern pools of Zorhros, where their silver-flecked scales blend with stone, shadow, and mineral-blue water. Elusive in the wild but vital to settlement life, they are prized by predators, fishermen, and the protected fish farms that help feed the cities.
Rib Lantern
Rib Lanterns are harmless filter feeders found in Zorhros’s mineral caverns. Their clear bodies, white ribbing, and dark sensory spots give them an eerie, mask-like look. They cling in glowing clusters to damp stone, drawing vapor, spores, and harmful gases from the air.
Miners trust their soft blue-and-amber glow: where Rib Lanterns gather, the air is usually safe to breathe.Â
Geyser Eels thrive in the thermal vents of the wastelands and the deep subterranean lakes of Zorhros. Electric, slippery, and quick to vanish into hot mineral currents, they are notoriously difficult to catch without insulated nets and steady hands. Their meat is prized in settlement kitchens, where Geyser Eel stew is considered worth the risk — especially by those safely waiting at the table.

Glasswings
Glasswings drift along the high cliffs of Zorhros like shards of living crystal, their translucent wings beautiful enough to admire and sharp enough to draw blood. They feed on lantern moss, mineral nectar, and glowing cavern spores. When the adults die, their wings are carefully collected for shimmer-jars, glowing softly through Jölthar in settlement windows and storefronts.Â
Amber Býrhas
Small winged pollinators found near Dustblossom, Bitterleaf, and mineral blooms across Zorhros. Their dark fuzzy bodies, glassy amber wings, and faint blue-gold glow make them easy to spot at dusk.
Amber Býrha produce Amberdew, a smoky-sweet resin used to steady breathing and restore strength, and Glasswax, a translucent hive material prized for sealing masks, filters, and delicate gear.
Rock Skärha
A lean, many-legged desert predator found in scrub flats, dry washes, cave mouths, and rocky nesting grounds. Its stone-colored armor hides it against the desert floor, while its hooked forelimbs can crack Ghent hen eggs and kill newly hatched young.
Its sting can cause fever, black-veined bruising, and tissue rot if untreated. Though dangerous, Rock Skärha help control small cave rats and burrowing pests.Â
Speckled Marlut
Speckled Marluts are small, quick desert rodents. They are the only known animals immune to Skärha venom, which is why they are often seen near Ghent hen nests, hunting the Skärha before it reaches the eggs.  Marlut trails often lead to safe burrows, low scrub cover, and hidden water roots. Where Marluts gather, something nearby is usually worth finding — or worth avoiding.
Dusthares
Dusthares are small, agile mammals with oversized ears built for heat and hearing. They can detect the faintest scrape beneath sand, stone, or floorboards, making them prized in homes and shops as early warners of anything approaching. Cute, quick, and clever enough to avoid most hands, they are also a traditional ingredient in SolFest savory harvest pies.
Ghent Hens
Ghent Hens are hardy, flightless birds kept across Zorhros for their nutrient-rich eggs and resilient feathers. Speckled in pastel pink, gray-blue, and jewel-toned markings, they are prettier than their stubborn nature suggests. Their off-key calls echo along lake beds and ridge trails, while their feathers are used for bedding, insulation, festival trim, and woven goods.
